Week 21: Sword of the Spirit
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:13-17
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written. Matthew 4:1-4
Paul instructs us as we stand firm against the enemy and his evil schemes against us, to take the sword of the Spirit and then Paul tells us what that is. It IS the word of God. God has given us an offensive weapon against the enemy and his lies. The Bible is not just a set of ancient records and stories of a group of people from the Middle East.
The book of Hebrews lets us know that the collection of books and letters that we call the Bible is supernatural. It is not a static thing, but a very active gift from God, to us as believers. The Bible not only contains truth about God, but also DOES things on behalf of God.
The Bible confirms the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and puts to flight the enemy in our lives. The Bible is a work of God Himself. God, in His letter to Timothy, lets us know that ALL of the Bible is from God and is useful.
Our scriptures are without error and given to us by God. They’re given to us so that we could know who God is and given to us so that we are equipped to battle the enemy. The Bible is not merely a religious book to be studied, but THE TRUE WORD OF GOD THAT WE ARE TO INGEST and root our lives in.
The Bible contains many different genres of literature like poetry and prose, like wisdom literature and history. And the Bible, from the very beginning to the very end declares God’s redemptive work towards His people and all of creation through the gospel of His Son Jesus Christ.
And the reason I believe that the Apostle Paul refers to the word of God as a sword to be used to fight off the enemy, is because it is TRUTH. It’s not just true, it is truth and it can be trusted. And one of the enemy’s primary tactics in his warring against us is to try and twist the truth and get us to believe lies about God and to believe lies about our self.
Remember what the enemy did to Eve in the garden of Eden? He tried to twist the word of God into a lie to get her to doubt God. Now, the more we know and are invaded by the word of God, the better equipped we are to fend off these enemy attacks. That’s what Jesus did when He was tempted in the desert. The enemy came to Jesus with a temptation that was rooted in a lie and each time Jesus responded to that temptation with these words, “it is written…”. And then Jesus quoted the word of God.
You need some “it is written’s” in your life. That means when the enemy whispers a lie to you in your life, then you have the truth of the word of God, that you know by memory that you can stand on. Now, let me ask you, do you have those in your life? You should if you are a follower of Jesus.
It’s not as hard as you think and its vital to the spiritual battles that you find yourself in. God has also given us the gift of google. I’m being serious here. Go and search for Bible verses that address your specific struggles. And then memorize a few of those verses.
And when the enemy attacks, you will be able to fight back with the sword of the spirit. You will have some “it is written’s”. And as the word of God is driven deeper and DEEPER into your heart I promise, you will also DEEPEN your relationship with Jesus Christ.
